Leica MP of 1956
The Leica MP, introduced in 195625, is essentially a combination of the Leica M3 and the Leicavit trigger base360. This model was based on the M3 and was fitted with the Leicavit360. The development of the MP was facilitated by Ludwig Leitz, Director of Research, as well as David Douglas Duncan and Alfred Eisenstaedt25. The deliveries began in 195625.
Compared to Leica M3
It differs from the M3 due to several modifications, which include360:

- The gears are made of hardened steel, not brass, to better withstand wear360.

- Inside the camera, under the base cover, is the letter "P" (indicating 'professional')360. The digits following "P" should correspond with those following "MP" on the top plate360. This camera was specifically designed for professional photojournalists25.The durable design of these cameras allows field photographers to handle them roughly in extreme heat, cold, and humidity, significantly reducing the risk of breakdowns that require professional repair56. Initially, the intention was to engrave "M3P" on the top plate, but at the last minute, the designation "MP" was chosen instead360.

Quantity
Initially, Leitz decided to launch a limited production run of 450 MP cameras, combining the rapid-winding Leicavit with the M3360. However, factory records indicate that production likely stopped at MP402, implying that only 402 units were actually manufactured360. Jim Lager also confirmed from his study of the actual delivery records from Leitz in Solms, Germany, that only 402 MP cameras were manufactured by Leitz in Wetzlar273.
Weight and Height
Leica MP measures 87mm in height, 138mm in length, and 36mm in width. It has a viewfinder magnification of 0.91x and a rangefinder base length of 68.5mm. The total weight is 699g191.
Authenticity Check
Several top covers were stolen from Wetzlar in late 1950s, and approximately six cameras, with serial numbers higher than the last ones produced at the factory, started circulating. A few additional bodies with lower serial numbers have also appeared49.
The old model M3 rangefinders lacked the notches that are found above and below the center rectangle. MP cameras of 1956 also had this type of rangefinder49.
Many Leica MP 1956 cameras have been legitimately modified to include features such as self-timers, new housings, new top plates, and possibly single stroke winding heads49.
Every authentic Leica MP from 1956 has its serial number engraved on the chassis. Additionally, each genuine MP features a double brake system: one brake for the opening curtain and another standard brake for the closing curtain49.
To ensure the legitimacy of the camera, one effective method is to check the camera seal from its most recent repair. You can find the fifth flange screw at the 12 o'clock position of the lens flange, typically covered with black sealing wax. If the camera has been overhauled by an authorized Leitz repair agency, this screw will be sealed and marked with a raised letter or letters. Leitz, USA, uses the script "NY", Wetzlar uses an "L", Midland uses a "C", and Luton uses a "B". If you see one of these markings, it is highly unlikely that the camera is anything other than what it claims to be. This seal is present on every M camera with a serial number above 70200049.

This press photographer's Leica was introduced at the peak of Leica's popularity among photojournalists, just before the introduction of the Nikon F and the subsequent influx of SLRs from Japan. The fact that some MPs were available in a black enamel finish helped elevate the previously disregarded (for being "old-fashioned") black camera to professional status. This shift contributed to the industry-wide reintroduction of this finish, which had largely been abandoned by the mid-1930s in favor of the more durable but more conspicuous silver matte chrome plating on exposed metal parts131.

Leitz emphasized that the dealer organizations held exclusive authority over determining who was eligible to receive one. During the years 1957 to 1958, obtaining an MP was viewed as an extraordinary achievement, particularly for individuals who were not considered "qualified"131.
