Leica MP2

The Leica MP2 was produced in 1959 (or 1958357), with a limited batch of 15 units (serial numbers 952001-952015)360. It is highly unlikely that all fifteen examples have survived, as some were probably dismantled for testing360. The small production run suggests that the Leica MP2 was created to test the market360. Some sources indicate that the MP2 cameras were test series of 27 units, six of which were black357.

The Leica MP2 is a modified version of the Leica M2, featuring parallax-corrected frames for 35mm, 50mm, and 90mm focal lengths360. It is important to note that, despite its name, the Leica MP2 is not a modified Leica MP of 1956360. This distinction can be confusing, especially since Leitz sometimes converted Leica M3 cameras to accept the Leicavit, effectively creating cameras that share characteristics with the Leica MP of 1956, which are unrelated to the Leica MP2360

The Leica MP2 retains many features from the Leica M3 electric motor but in a more refined form360. In addition to electrical and mechanical modifications to the motor, the brass intermediate gear has been replaced with a hardened steel one360. Another notable difference between the Leica MP2 motor and the Leica M3 motor is that the Leica MP2 includes a built-in power pack while maintaining the same motor coupling position, meaning it uses the same type of intermediate wheel in the shutter winding device360. The motor release mechanism is activated through the regular shutter release, and there is a locking ring for continuous shooting360. Unlike other models, the frame counter is located at the back of the motor, making it visible360. The battery pack is secured to the base of the motor and provides a solid grip for the hand360. Additionally, a smaller battery pack is available for use360

The Leica MP2 with serial number 935509 was sold for €1560000 including buyer's premium at the 44th Leitz Photographica Auction  on the 8th of June, 2024.
