Leica MP3 (The LHSA Leica MP3)

  • released in 2005314
  • The LHSA Leica MP3 is the third special edition camera commissioned by the Leica Historical Society of America (LHSA). This edition features unique elements, such as special paint finishes and mechanical details inspired by classic Leica models from the past273.
  • The LHSA Special Edition MP3 camera commemorates the 50th anniversary of the original Leica MP, which was produced from 1956 to 1957. The LHSA MP3 serves as the successor to both the Leica MP from 1956 and the Leica MP2. It closely follows the original MP's design, retaining key features like the raised window frames and dog-ear strap lugs273.
  • Notably, the MP3 reintroduces the external frame counter, a feature last seen over thirty years ago on the classic Leica M2. The camera engravings are inspired by those found on Leica M cameras from the 1950s and 1960s. The classic Leica script appears on the top plate, alongside the designation "MP3" followed by the camera's regular serial number. Additionally, the individual edition number is engraved on the hot shoe, while the LHSA logo is discreetly displayed on the plate that bears the film loading diagram, located under the camera's bottom cover. The only external difference from the original MP is the battery cover on the front of the camera. The body covering closely resembles the vulcanite used on early M cameras, ensuring that the LHSA MP3 remains as true to the original Leica MP as possible273.
  • The viewfinder framelines are limited to those for 35mm, 50mm, and 90mm lenses, similar to the M2 design. Only one set of framelines is visible at a time in the viewfinder, reducing distractions for the photographer. Many original MPs were returned to the factory for this same conversion. Additionally, a built-in light meter from the current MP model is included for user convenience273.
  • A special version of the 50mm f/1.4 ASPH Summilux-M lens, designed to recall the appearance of the original version, will also be offered with the LHSA MP3. This lens will be available in either a satin chrome or black paint finish to match the MP3. Its mount is made of heavy brass and features the wide scalloped focusing ring of the original 50 Summilux, along with the classic 1950s engraving style. A separate metal lens hood and a metal lens cap, both featuring the Leica logo, will also be provided. Furthermore, a specially engraved Leicavit will be available in matching black paint or satin chrome finishes, engraved as the original Leicavit MP273.
  • Only 1,000 units of the LHSA MP3 will be produced, consisting of 500 in black paint and 500 in satin chrome. The camera, lens, and Leicavit will be available for purchase individually or in specially boxed sets. The packaging for the MP3 reflects the style of Leica boxes from the 1930s, featuring a red exterior with the gold embossed Leica logo on the top cover. Each camera will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity273.
