2.1CM F/4 SUPER ANGULON

The 2.1cm f/4 Super Angulon (code-named SUOON¹⁸⁴, catalogue number 11002K³⁶¹) lens introduced at Photokina 1958⁴⁶⁶, was based on the well-known design of the Angulon lens by Josef Schneider, along with its improved successor, the Super Angulon³⁶⁰. This lens covered an angle of 92 degrees, had a nine-element glass construction³⁶⁰ with 4 elements⁵⁴² and required a special deep⁵⁴² rear lens cap (code-named OIXMO, catalogue number 14048) to protect the protruding rear elements of the screw mount lenses¹⁸⁴. 

This first version of the 2.1cm f/4 Super Angulon lens featured a rotating chrome mount equipped with dual focusing scales that used red and black numerals¹⁸⁴.

The lens hood for this lens was code-named IWKOO⁵⁴². The early variants of IWKOO were engraved "IWKOO 1:4/21", while the later variants featured "Super-Angulon 21mm" engraving⁵⁴².

The brightline viewfinder, known by the code name SBKOO, was designed to assist with composition⁵⁴².

The lens was compatible with E39 screw-in filters⁵⁴².

Although it was released during a time when screw-mounted Leicas were about to be discontinued, the 2.1cm f/4 Super Angulon lens was offered with both screw and bayonet mounts³⁶⁰. The performance of the 2.1cm f/4 Super Angulon lens was surprisingly disappointing, particularly due to unsatisfactory vignetting when using colour materials³⁶⁰. With a total output of 1462¹⁸⁴ lenses in screw mounts, the 2.1cm f/4 Super Angulon lens was considered a limited-production lens³⁶⁰. Overall, 58800 screw and bayonet mount 2.1cm f/4 Super Angulon lenses were produced between 1958 and 1959⁴³⁹ (or 1963³⁶⁰) with serial numbers ranging from 1583001 through 1716100⁴³⁹.

The prototype lens number 127-0003 was sold for 43200 Euros including buyer's premium at the 48th Leitz Photographica Auction on June 13, 2026⁵⁸⁵. The lens became part of a prominent Hong Kongese collection in August of 2026.

The prototype lens number 11805803 is one of only three experimental Leitz 2.1cm f/4 Super Angulon lenses made in M39 mount⁵³³. This lens was recorded in the Schneider production books as Leitz-Muster (Leitz sample)⁵³³. Interestingly, production of the 2.1cm f/4 Super Angulon lens officially ceased in 1963; however, this particular example was manufactured in 1971—at a time when Leica no longer produced screw-mount cameras⁵³³.
